Undo a cleanup and restore items from the Trash

How Undo works in dux, what it cannot undo and why free space may not change right after a cleanup.

Updated October 2026

Files dux removes go to the Trash or are replaced by APFS clones, and dux never empties the Trash for you. The few exceptions are listed below, and the review sheet names them before you confirm.

Undo

  • Right after a cleanup, choose Undo in the note at the top of the window, or press Command Z.
  • Later, open Activity and choose Undo on the row of the action.

Undo puts items back where they were, as long as they are still in the Trash. Clones are undone by putting the replaced copies back from the Trash.

What cannot be undone

Two kinds of action cannot be undone, and the review sheet says so before you confirm:

  • Tool commands, such as xcrun simctl delete unavailable and brew cleanup --prune=all. They delete directly, without the Trash. Only the direct download runs them.
  • Removed cloud downloads. They download again when you open the files.

I cleaned up, but my free space did not change

Files in the Trash still use space until the Trash is emptied. Emptying it is the step that frees the space, and the step that cannot be undone. Activity shows how much is waiting in the Trash, with an Open Trash button.

Restore by hand

If you already emptied the Trash, dux cannot bring items back. Restore from a Time Machine backup if you have one.
